Buying & Handling

Demand for Prosciutto di Parma® continues to increase as more and more Americans learn about this extraordinary Italian food. As a consequence, the product is now widely available in the U.S.

Most Parma Hams are shipped to the U.S. already deboned, to permit machine slicing. Bone-in hams can be deboned, then sliced on a machine, or they can be hand sliced. Hand slicing hams requires special training, but it draws customers and can increase sales.

To make sure you’re buying the best, make a point of asking for Prosciutto di Parma® by name. On the ham itself, you will see the five-point ducal crown firebrand (with “Parma” inside the crown), a mark guaranteeing its authenticity. Providing an extra measure of consumer protection, the European Union has awarded Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certification to Prosciutto di Parma®.
