The town of Parma
Distinguished British travel writer Eric Newby described Parma as his favourite European city - at once “remarkable... beautiful... elegant... bizarre”. A city of exquisite characteristics, Parma boasts a fine Romanesque cathedral and baptistry, and an opera house with strong connections with Verdi, who lived locally. The 12th-century pink marble Duomo is adorned with frescoes of the city's great artists: Correggio and Parmigianino. Maria Luigia (Napoleon's second wife and the Empress of Austria) reigned over the province and city of Parma in the nineteenth century and is responsible for much of the city's exquisite architecture. The Parmigiani are vibrant, passionate people appreciative of life's diverse pleasures, and of the effort and attention required to achieve the very best. And this - the spirit of Parma, is evident in the city's extraordinary artistic, cultural and gastronomic.
