Excellent growth in 2006 pre-sliced export figures
16.01.07
Pre-sliced Parma Ham is doing very well across the globe: 2006 saw a 29,1% increase, the production figure being 4.257 tons, of which 28% is sold on the Italian market and 72% exported. Export has exceeded 3.000 tons, (600.000 hams) whereas Italian sales sum up to 1200 tons (235.000 hams) so altogether 835.000 Parma Hams become pre-sliced packets. As regards the number of packets sold, we have reached 40.000.000, of which 29 million are exported, 11million are sold in Italy. The Italian sales are a significant number, especially if you stop to consider that each packet bears the black triangle and golden ducal crown and is in itself a communication vehicle of the Consorzio brand. One fact deserves special mention: since year 2000 sales of the pre-sliced product have tripled both in Italy and abroad. Considering each main export market, there was a two-figure increase in all of them except Switzerland, which unfortunately registered a 30,6% decrease. 85% of exported pre-sliced Prosciutto di Parma reaches European markets, whereas 15% is concentrated in the U.S., Canada and Japan. The four top markets, the UK, France, Germany and the U.S. have all done very well. Pre-sliced sales in the German market in particular have picked up after a difficult time. Among the new markets Canada is distinguishing itself. Here we have recently obtained the go-ahead for exporting pre-sliced product and, in a very short time, reached 51 tons corresponding to 10.000 pre-sliced hams. Encouraging news from Eastern Europe too - the Russian and Polish markets have much untapped potential. A glance at performance in our three main extra-European markets: US, Canada, and Japan. Altogether we registered an increase of 20.000 pieces, with substantial differences between one market and the other which we can now consider: In the U.S.: 361.670 Prosciutti di Parma, which means the previous year's figure, a very good one, is confirmed: However although there are no numeric changes, there have been shifts as to the type of product sold: pre-sliced hams increased by 20.000 pieces, and consequently sales of whole hams dropped by 20.000. A substantial increase in Canada, +24,2%, corresponding to 8.000 hams, mainly due to pre-sliced ham but with a slight increase of whole hams as well. Very good figures in Japan too: thanks to a 14.6% increase we have exceeded 100.000 Prosciutti di Parma. This result is due to sales of whole hams , but pre-sliced packets also did quite well.
