A boom for the pre-sliced Parma Ham market

Parma, 19 July 2006 Parma Ham closes the first half of 2006 with excellent results in the pre-sliced segment: up 22.3% compared to the same period in 2005. Positive results both in Italy where Consortium companies sold nearly 5 million trays equal to 540 tons of product (+28.5%) as well as abroad where 13 million trays were sold equal to 1,300 tons of product. Giving a total sales figure for the first half of 2006 of 17.6 million pre-sliced packets (1,870 tons). Currently the pre-sliced market represents nearly 30% of exports: all European markets (except Switzerland) are showing positive signs with growth of over 40% in Germany, Belgium and in the new EU countries. Excellent results also in non-EU countries with the United States registering +33.6% (140 tons). Great Britain is the established leader for pre-sliced Parma having sold more than 4 million trays (400 tons), once again showing significant growth (+14%). Without a doubt the pre-sliced market belongs to Europe; outside of Europe, besides the USA, Japan is showing good growth (+23.8) with around 22 tons of ham exported. The results are excellent and are growing steadily. Last year, Consortium companies sold 3.3 million packets of pre-sliced product and sales have doubled over the last 5 years.
