The Korean market opens for Parma Ham
06.10.2005
Another success for the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma: after Singapore and Mexico, the Korean market was officially opened to the King of Hams today. The Consortium received the official news by the Italian Ambassador in Seoul: the statement also listed those companies that are authorized to export pork products to South Korea. All 20 of the Prosciutto di Parma production companies that made an official request have been authorized, regardless of whether they received an inspection by the Korean authorities or not. In fact, it should be pointed out that following the operations carried out in Italy last June, the Korean Authorities expressed their intention to only authorise those companies visited therefore not taking into consideration the practice of "sample" visits which seemed to be the basis of prior agreements between Italy and South Korea. Following on from this view, the Italian Health Authorities supported by the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma and other interested associations, demonstrated their perplexity to the Korean Authorities towards their proposed solution, at the same time as offering up the necessary guarantees to support the authorisation of all those companies that made an application. The decisive action taken by the Italian Embassy had a direct influence on the Koreans accepting the demands made by our Institutions. Exports of Prosciutto di Parma to Korea will be possible as soon as the Ministry for Health renders the relevant health certificate official (already drafted and agreed with the Korean Authority) and which must accompany products in Korea. "We are extremely satisfied: the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma has worked hard with the competent Institutions so that all companies can export to Korea. However, the merit is not all ours but also that of the Ministry for Health and the Italian Embassy who have carried out negotiations in an exemplary manner" commented Stefano Tedeschi, president of the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma.
