Consorzio's new Statute
11/10/04
Parma, 7th October 2004 – The Italian Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies has given its approval of the “Prociutto di Parma” Consortium’s new statutory text. “Finally – after more than two years of negotiations – a positive solution has been reached thanks to the definition of an agreement, the result of extended mediation work to unite the interests of all the various components of the production chain: breeders, butchers, seasoners and producers” said Alessandro Utini, President of the Parma Ham Consortium. The statute reform was called for by updated decrees of Law N° 526/99, issued in order to guarantee equal representation of the production chain regarding the organization of partnership bodies belonging to Tutelary Consortiums. It wasn’t easy finding an agreement that satisfied all the involved parties. The chain – remember – is made up of 5,386 pig breeding farms, 139 abattoirs, 189 manufacturing companies and about 3,000 process workers just in the providence of Parma alone. The principal driving factor of the new arrangement is that of inter-professionalism: in fact, the new statute predicts the possibility for breeders, butchers and producers to associate with the Consortium, contributing towards consortium costs with their individual fee quotas. Other significant news concerns the criteria for nominating directors to the board: in actual fact, the new statute foresees that there are representatives of all the different chain categories on the Board. The system of assigning votes to consortium members is also to change, becoming proportional to the quantity produced via a vote by classification attribution system. The text that received MIPAF permission will shortly be presented to the consortium members’ Assembly to be approved in its definitive form. “We are extremely satisfied – concluded Utini – we have reached an agreement that guarantees equal representation of the whole production chain among Consortium members. This result has been obtained thanks to the determining contribution of the Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policy and the Emilia-Romagna Region who, with hard work, competence and maximum availability, worked alongside us in this important transitional phase. At this point, we suggest that the renewal of partnership responsibilities on the basis of the new statutory rulings are organized as soon as possible”.
